Perched high on the cliff face the man held the stick of dynamite and watched the Berbers creeping over the rocks towards him. His arm swung back and a wisp of smoke curved downwards into the mob, looking as harmless as a feather flying through the air. There was a flash and the sound of the explosion hit us; the noise went on hammering the cliff face, as the whole area of beaten rock on which the mob stood lifted skywards.
