This book is the first summary publication of the unique collection of works of Ancient Russian art of the XV-XVIIIth centuries. In the course of many centuries monasteries and cathedrals in towns and villages of the Russian North received statues, relief icons, shrines, church utensils, monumental carved iconostases, Sanctuary doors with decorated upper sections, as contributions and orders of the Tsar, the boyars, nobility, patriarchs and metropolitans. They were executed by outstanding masters of Moscow, Great Novgorod, Rostov, Yaroslavl and other centers of the artistic culture of the old Russia. This book covers a long period of history of wooden sculpture and iconostasis carving of the Russian North.
